Men's Skincare Simplified: A Basic Product Guide for Guys

Posted November 2024

Guys, I hate to break it to you, but unfortunately soap and water just isn’t enough when it comes to looking after your skin for life.

But it also doesn’t have to be complicated. A few good quality, core products in your daily routine will keep your skin clear, hydrated and well looked after as you age.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Identifying your skin type is the first step to effective skincare. The main types include:

  • Oily skin: Shiny, greasier feel, especially by midday.
  • Dry skin: Feels tight and dry, and may flake.
  • Combination skin: Oily in some areas (like the T-zone), dry in others.
  • Sensitive skin: Reacts easily to products or changes in the environment.
  • Normal skin: Balanced moisture, not overly oily or dry.

Pinpointing your skin type will help you choose products that will be most beneficial and prevent skin problems.

Essential Skincare Products for Men: The Basics

Skin is skin. Whether you’re a man or woman, skin care is essential for long term skin health and to prevent skin cancers.

Cleanser

A good cleanser won’t strip the skin and dry out your face. Soap and some cheap and nasty cleansers will be way too harsh and do more harm than good. Opt for a foaming gel cleanser if you have more oily skin, and a cream or lotion based cleanser for dry or sensitive skin. Always look for one that is mild and fragrance free. Once a day is fine, but if you can manage twice a day that’s also great.

We love The Skincare Company Daily Cleanser for a simple, effective daily cleanser for all skin types.

B3 (Niacinamide)

Topical vitamin B3, or niacinamide, is crucial for skin health as it enhances the skin's barrier function, reduces inflammation, and protects against UV damage. For men, it can also help minimize hyperpigmentation, promoting an even skin tone. Regular use may lower skin cancer risk by improving overall skin resilience. Apply in the mornings under your SPF.

Moisturiser

Moisturising is crucial for keeping your skin healthy. It helps to lock in moisture and protect your skin from environmental aggressors. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser if you have oily skin. Dry skin benefits from richer, cream-based moisturisers. Again once in the morning or at night can be plenty, but twice a day after cleansing is optimum.

Our pick is The Skincare Company Hydrating Moisturiser. A little goes a long way so the tub will last for ages!

Sunscreen
Non-negotiable! Sun damage can affect anyone, regardless of skin type. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 or higher every day to protect your skin from premature ageing and skin cancer. Look for non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and fragrance-free options if you have sensitive skin.

Our top picks are the AiryDay Clear as Day SPF50 sunscreen, and the AiryDay Pretty in Zinc for the more sensitive skin types.

Exfoliation
I know, 4 products is starting to sound like a lot. But this one you only have to do once a week!
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and can help prevent ingrown hairs, making your skin look smoother and clearer. Physical exfoliants can damage skin, so put away the apricot scrub and opt for an AHA or BHA chemical exfoliant.

Optional Extras Enhanced Skin Care

If you’re looking to go past the basics and see some really good results, there are a few extra things you can add into your weekly routine.

Serums
Serums are concentrated formulas that target specific concerns like ageing, hydration, or dull skin. A Vitamin C serum is great for all skin types and helps to brighten and protect your skin. Vitamin B3 Serum is excellent for sun damage and congested skin, and Vitamin A is ideal for anti-ageing.

We love The Skincare Company Vitamin C Serum, The Skincare Company Vitamin A Serum and Solarcare Intensive B3

An easy routine

Make it easy for yourself! Keep your cleanser in your shower, and then just follow with a moisturiser. Keep your sun protection next to your toothbrush for the morning.

Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. With the right products tailored to your skin type and simple daily practices, you can maintain healthy, vibrant skin. Remember, it’s never too late to start taking care of your skin!
