As if pregnancy wasn’t already overwhelming enough as it is, you’re probably finding yourself navigating a sea of do’s and don’ts when it comes to…well literally anything.
We hope to shed a little bit of light on what to do when it comes to your skin, without making it too complicated or filling you with fear. Navigating skincare during pregnancy involves understanding which treatments and products are safe, balancing the needs of your skin with safety.
There is a lot of information on the internet about what you can and can’t do during pregnancy, so we always strongly advise you consult with a doctor to make informed decisions suitable for you.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can significantly alter the skin. Increased sensitivity, hyperpigmentation, acne flare-ups, and stretch marks are common as the body adjusts. These changes necessitate a careful approach to skincare, focusing on gentle, safe products to manage these new skin concerns effectively.
Some ingredients found in skincare products and treatments are either considered unsafe during pregnancy, or there isn’t enough research and so advisable to avoid as a precaution. Here’s what to avoid and why:
Retinoids: These are derivatives of Vitamin A, commonly found in anti-aging skincare products. High doses of Vitamin A have been associated with congenital birth defects. Even though only a very minute amount of Vitamin A is absorbed through the skin, it is generally advisable to avoid it to be safe.
High-dose Salicylic Acid: Often used in acne treatments, high-dose salicylic acid (like those used in professional chemical peels) should be avoided. While everyday use in low concentrations (such as in over-the-counter face washes) is generally considered safe, the higher doses can pose risks during pregnancy.
Hydroquinone: A skin-lightening agent, hydroquinone is absorbed at a relatively high rate through the skin, and there is not enough safety data regarding its use during pregnancy. Therefore, it is better to avoid it to prevent any potential risk to the fetus.
There are still many great products and treatments you can continue with during pregnancy.
Hydrating Cleansers and Moisturisers: Look for hydrating and gentle products that are free from harmful chemicals. Cleansers with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid and moisturisers that are oil-free and non-comedogenic are ideal. And of course, hydration boosting face oils are awesome to use.
Antioxidant Serums: Vitamin C serums can help protect the skin from environmental damage and are safe for use during pregnancy. They help brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pigmentation.
Facials: Gentle facials are safe. Look for facials that focus on hydration and use safe, mild ingredients.
Gentle Lactic Acid Peels: Lactic acid peels are a popular choice for pregnant women seeking a mild and safe chemical peel option. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from milk, making it one of the gentler peeling agents available. It provides mild exfoliation and a hydration boost and is great for sensitive skin.
LED Light Therapy: LED therapy using red light can be safe and beneficial during pregnancy. It helps reduce inflammation and can boost collagen production without using harmful chemicals or UV light.

We offer a range of services to women in this phase of their life, as our doctors are highly education in Reproductive Medicine.
