Freckles: tiny specks that sprinkle across the skin, often seen as marks of individual beauty.
Many people (including us!) love freckles and consider them a unique trait that enhances their appearance. But what exactly are freckles, and why do they appear? Are they a cause for concern, and if they bother you, what can you do about them?
Freckles, or ephelides, are small, flat, brown marks that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin.
They are most common in people with lighter skin and those who genetically tend to develop these spots. Freckles form as a result of a combination of genetic predisposition and sun exposure, which increases the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.
Generally, freckles themselves are not dangerous. They are typically harmless and are more common in individuals with lighter skin.
However, because they result from sun exposure, freckles can be a sign of your skin reacting to UV rays. It's crucial to monitor freckles for changes, as they can sometimes be confused with more serious skin conditions, such as skin cancer. As a GP I have seen skin cancers pretending to be freckles, so I encourage you to get your skin checked regularly.
Freckles are beautiful, but if for whatever reason your freckles bother you, that’s ok too and there are several treatment options available:
How It Works: IPL therapy uses light energy to target and diminish the appearance of freckles. The light energy is absorbed by the pigmented areas causing the freckles, breaking down the melanin that darkens the skin.
Results: This treatment can significantly reduce the visibility of freckles, leading to clearer, more even-toned skin. Several sessions may be required for optimal results.
How It Works: Chemical peels involve applying a solution to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin underneath is usually smoother, less wrinkled, and may have fewer freckles. The downtime from these peels can be quite mild.
Types of Peels: Lighter peels might offer gradual fading over time, while deeper peels provide more dramatic results.
Results: Depending on the depth of the peel, you may see a reduction in freckles and overall improvements in skin texture and tone.
How They Work: Retinoids help to speed up the skin’s natural shedding process, which can dilute the appearance of freckles by removing the top layers of freckled skin.
Usage: Regular use of retinoids can help lighten freckles over time and improve skin health.
Results: With consistent use, retinoids can reduce the intensity of freckles and prevent new ones from forming.

Topical high-strength B3 (niacinamide) is effective for treating freckles by inhibiting melanin production and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Niacinamide works by interfering with the transfer of melanin to the skin's surface, thereby lightening existing freckles and preventing new ones from forming. Additionally, it offers anti-inflammatory properties, which help soothe the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin types. Regular application, as part of a comprehensive skincare routine, can lead to a more even skin tone and improved skin texture. Niacinamide is well-tolerated and can be combined with other treatments for enhanced results.

Before deciding on any treatment, it’s important to consult with a skincare professional. Treatments like IPL and chemical peels should be tailored to your specific skin type and condition to avoid complications and achieve the best results.
