You’ve spent all year putting in the hard work, staying on top of your skin treatments, homecare regime and hydration. Now it’s hot, it’s humid and it’s busy with all the best Christmas and New Years festivities beginning. The sun, sugar, alcohol and dehydration are all our skin's worst enemies. And the worst part is it’s event season - all the photos! Fear not! There are a few simple things you can do to keep on top of your skin health during this time. Consistency is key, but we believe just by sticking to these few healthy skin habits you can keep your skin looking radiant and healthy this summer silly season.
Water is the building block of healthy skin. It’s an essential part of the all of the working processes within the skin, such as cell turnover and repair. Hydrated skin maintains a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Our skin is also a reflection of what’s happening on the inside. A build up of toxins and waste will show on our skin, and so it’s important to stay hydrated to allow the body to transport the appropriate nutrients and eliminate waste. If you’re spending extra time outside or on the bubbles this summer, ensure your drinking more water than you usually would.
We want to scream it from the rooftops. WEAR YOUR SPF EVERY DAMN DAY! Here in Australia, skin cancer rates are alarmingly high. It’s essential that a high-quality sunscreen or zinc product is in your morning routine. If you’re spending more time in the sun, reapply sunscreen every two hours. If you’re worried that sunscreen will make you break out, then it could be time to invest in some high-quality, skin-friendly products. We absolutely love the Airyday range, which includes both SPF and Zinc products in either clear or tinted. They won’t block your pores and work perfectly under makeup. And for our minimalist girlies, you can always invest in a good moisturiser that also has decent SPF content, such as this one from The Skincare Company.
Niacinamide is known for its ability to brighten the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture, reduce surface oils and reduce pigmentation. One of our most popular reasons for prescribing niacinamide to our patients is to repair barrier function. There is also data to suggest that the daily use of a topical B3 reduces your risk of developing skin cancers (over just using SPF alone). Niacinamide is an absolute powerhouse of a vitamin that will be your skin saviour this summer.
We won’t nag you, or judge you if you fall off your routine from time to time. It is the holidays after all. But we do, with love, encourage you to try your best to stick to these skin habits. Results take time, especially when it comes to skin and so it really pays off to stick to your routine as much as you can. Pick a couple of non-negotiables and really stick with it. It’s easier to prevent premature ageing and skin damage than it is to treat it. Sometimes it helps to buy your skin products in bulk or ahead of time, so when you’re busy during the Christmas rush you won’t run out of your favourites. There are also experts, like the ones here at PMAC that are here to help. Why not treat yourself and book in a New Year treatment, or let your loved one know it would be the perfect gift!
